John Anthony  Vermillion

Funeral services for John Anthony Vermillion, 69, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 22 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.



He passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 at his home.



John was born May 21, 1942 in Dallas, Texas to John & Juanita Bugg Vermillion. He grew up in Sulphur Springs and Malakoff where he graduated from high school. John was a graduate of Abilene Christian University and Sam Houston State University. He served in the United States Navy and the Dallas and Richardson Police Departments. John retired from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles in 2004 as an Administrative Law Judge. He was a member of the Athens Country Club where he was an avid golfer, and he was a member of the Methodist Church. John was married for 38 years to his loving wife Kathleen, and he was a very loving father and grandfather.



He was preceded in death by his parents.



John is survived by his wife Kathleen Vermillion of Athens; sons and daughters-in-law: John and Kimberly Vermillion of Greenville, Matthew and Mandy Vermillion of Calgary, Alberta and one grandchild, John Wyatt Vermillion; brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert and Carole Robertson of Perry Hall, Maryland, Larry and Kathy Vermillion of Waxahachie, Gary and Phyllis Vermillion of Star Harbor and Joe and Debra Vermillion of Round Rock. He is also survived by father-in-law Francis Hurley of Elmira, New York; sisters and brothers-in-law: Francis and Nancy Hurley of Lakeland, Florida, Robert and Doreen Hurley of Dushore, Pennsylvania, Edward and Betty Van Schoick of Elmira, New York, Mary Pat Sullivan of Elmira, New York and Nancy Neylon of Rochester, New York.



The family would like to extend its appreciation to IntegraCare and IntegraCare Hospice, and to the many friends and family who have provided love and support through this difficult time.



Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2011 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.
