Athens- A visitation for Robert McNair Jr., 84, of Athens are scheduled for 7-8:00 P.M. Monday, March 13, 2017 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.
Mr. McNair passed away on March 10, 2017 in Frankston, Texas following a lengthy illness.
Robert Hugh McNair Jr. was born January 5, 1933 in Conehatta, Mississippi the son of Robert Hugh McNair Sr. and Myrtle Mitchell McNair. Robert proudly retired from the US Navy after 20 years as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, Fire Control Technician. He served on the following aircraft carriers; USS Forestall, USS Ranger and the USS Constellation. Following his military career Robert worked for Shell Oil and retired after 20 years. He was a devoted Baptist who served as a Deacon in his church where his family attended. He loved hunting and fishing, his family and especially his grandchildren. He learned before his death that he was going to be a great grandpa and the smile on his face lit up the entire room.
Robert has been reunited with God and his wife of 50 years Joanne Williams McNair; his parents, Robert Hugh McNair SR & Myrtle Mitchell McNair; siblings, Francis Thomas, Hughla Stamper; Son in law, Keith Willingham.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 8 years Sue Syler of Athens; his son Robert McNair III and his wife Theresa of Titusville, Florida; his daughters, Anita Lynn McNair Smith and her husband Steve of Frankston, Nancy Joanne McNair Russell and her husband Greg of Athens; brother James McNair of Gordo, Alabama; two step-daughters, Dr. Suellen van der Colff of Athens, Summer Lawrence and husband Bruce of Athens; one step-son Mark Syler of Salina, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Luke McNair, Dean Willingham, Colby Willingham, Judson Russell, Bezzy Russell, Joanne Russell, & Robbie Russell; ten step-grandchildren and one great grandchild which is on its way.
Graveside services will be held at Red Level Cemetery in Crystal River, Florida at a later date.
