The Baptism

Aunt Rene and Mom (Marcelle) had meet a preacher during a recent visit to the hospital.  They liked him so much that they decided they both wanted to be baptized by him.  So, one cold winter eve I drove the ladies to the church in Altus.  Immediatedly they were introduced and taken to a side room to prepare while the preacher opened the services.  All went well until a couple of church ladies decided to go in and help them change clothes.  The church ladies were dismissed from their well-meaning duties.  As the preacher talked, one could overhear Aunt Rene and Mom discuss vent their feelings about the help...it resonated throughout the church.  All the church ladies turned around and smiled at me.

Finally, Mom was called to the baptismal.  She stepped up on the side in her dunking worthy housedress.  The setting sun shone brilliantly through the beautiful stained glass window and right through Mom's dress leaving little to the imagination.  When the preacher asked her if she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior, Mom replied, "WHY YEE-ESSSSSSS," almost implying the preacher was crazy to even ask such a question.  After the dunk, Mom looked like a little wet chihuahua.  All the church ladies turned around and smiled at me.

Next, Aunt Rene stepped up, affirmed the question, and was immersed......well sort of.  The preacher had barely dipped the back of her head in the water when Aunt Rene began struggling and began uttering " mmmm....mmmm....mmmm."  When the preacher then pulled her up, she resembled a wet poodle with only the front "bouffant" puff still in place.  All the church ladies turned around and smiled at me.

Getting baptized together was such a special night for the sisters.  I felt very privileged just being there with them.  No matter what they did together, the sisters always made it interesting.  And the Good Lord looked down and smiled at his girls.
