Condolence From: Heather (Weaver) Cliver
Condolence: I have to believe that everyone who ever knew Mrs. Gartrell was aware of how special she was - for me, as for countless others, I knew her as a caring and talented teacher in 7th grade Texas history. Just last week I was talking about her to a class of fellow military members in training with me, by way of explaining how passionate Texans are about our state heritage. She immediately came to mind as the shining example in my memories. It's almost like these last few days were orchestrated as a reminder of her legacy - first, it came up in training, and just three days ago we were all watching the Aerial America feature on Texas. I have to say, Mrs. Gartrell covered it all better than any fancy multimedia presentation ever could.

More than that, though, it was thanks to teachers like her at such a crucial time in my life, middle school, that I not only decided to pursue the teaching profession, but specifically felt drawn to the middle school grades. They host a special and very breakable, highly impressionable group of children that need the guidance only the most inspired teachers, like Mrs. Gartrell, can provide. The rest of us can only hope to reach that level of compassion and experience one day, and keep striving to live up to her standard of excellence. That, and have an unforgettable personality!

The most any person can do in a lifetime is make a positive impact on as many other lives as possible. That was her specialty, and her students will never forget what she taught us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
